Summary

The novel opens with Marc's Warrior Code. This is a personal list he created to guide him in everyday life. The list includes promises to get up early, work hard, treat others with respect, learn, help, be humble, and be neat. The final point on the list is that “I am the Warrior Kid” (Location 40).

Chapter 1 is titled “The Pumpkin and the Principal.” Marc is outside the principal's office and reveals the events that led up to this point. Nathan is a boy in his class and Nathan taunts the other kids by calling them names. He calls Marc Plate Face. Marc says Nathan makes the taunts in a way that could be considered a joke so the others would be tattletales if they told the teacher.
