Chapter 40 Summary

Magee goes for a run and ends up at the Pickwell house for a meal. By now, the Pickwells are well aware of who Magee is. The family reminds him of the Beales. Magee goes back to the McNab house where it has become harder and harder for him to think of ways to get Russell and Piper to go to school. The boys are talking about running away; they have gotten into trouble, wrecking a car and stealing candy. Magee is having a hard time dealing with his current situation. Part of him wants to leave the boys, but he feels that if he does, any chance the boys had at being good would be gone. In a weird way, the boys remind him of Hester and Lester. Magee has not been able to encourage the boys to focus on the positive and he's not interested...
