Many kids gather to watch Magee walk into the East End. As he crosses the street, Piper gets scared and yells for him to come back. It had just rained causing worms to come up from the ground and cover the streets and sidewalks. While most children think nothing of the worms and end up stepping on them, Magee remembers a time when he collected worms in a wheelbarrow and moved them safely to a compost pile.

As he walks down the street, Magee runs into Mars Bar, who informs Magee that he is "badder than ever." Magee replies that he too has increased in badness, so much so that he thinks he must be half black. This causes Mars Bar to erupt in laughter and challenge Magee to a race.
