Chapter 30 Summary

The candidates take the stage, and Raymond's mother surreptitiously gives Johnny Iselin a sedative to calm his nerves. Their moment is almost at hand. Marco's squad on the floor watches the proceedings, while the top FBI agents struggle to reach the assassin's box before Raymond can kill the candidates or carry out whatever the colonel placed in his friend's charge. As the presidential candidate reaches the point in his speech that will cue the gunshots, the FBI agents realize they are too late. They hear two shots. From the floor, the report comes that Raymond has shot his mother and stepfather, and that the candidate has not been harmed. Marco enters the box ahead of his agents, and after only a moment, exits again. There is another shot as Raymond kills himself.
