Chapter 18 Summary

Raymond and Ben Marco exchange Christmas gifts, and Raymond reveals that Jocie's husband has died. Shaw says he spoke with Senator Jordan, Jocie's father, and cleared up the misunderstanding of years ago, while also uniting in their contempt for the Iselins. Raymond also says that his mother now believes he should attempt to marry Jocie, after allowing her time to grieve. Marco offers to help his friend write a condolence letter and develop a correspondence that will reestablish his intentions as a suitor.

Soon, Raymond's mother schemes to announce Jocie's return to the United States through the Society pages of Raymond's own paper, without informing her son of the development. When Shaw phones to curse her out, Mrs. Iselin invites him to a costume ball taking place on the eve of Jocie's return. It.....
