Chapter 17 Summary

Marco and the G-men meet Raymond in Hungarian Charlie's, a restaurant named for its bellicose proprietor. They update Shaw on the breadth and scope of their investigation, and tell him that Chunjin's presence indicates that events are about to come to a head. Marco explains that he believes Shaw is a threat to the country, though Raymond may not know it. The colonel also reveals that his investigators have learned that Raymond had no sexual history before the war, and that he had never even been kissed, not even by Jocie. Here, Raymond stops, genuinely surprised that they spoke to his lost love in Argentina. He is shocked again when Marco tells Shaw that he killed Lembeck and Mavole. Raymond, sickened by the implications, volunteers for a new brainwashing by the American government.....
