Chapter 5 Summary

The Chapter begins with another flashback, this time to Raymond's youth. In the summer of Raymond's twenty-first year, he meets Jocelyn Jordan, the daughter of a liberal senator vacationing next door to the Iselin family. Raymond had been bitten by a snake, and Jocelyn ("Josie") manages to suck out the poison and treat the wound. She then takes Raymond for a more thorough examination at her father's cottage, where everyone is introduced. The first thing out of Raymond's mouth after his own name is a marriage proposal. Awkward moment compounds upon awkward moment when Senator Jordan realizes the boy's parentage. Raymond sides with his benefactor against the Iselins, though, and they all have a laugh. Raymond and Jocie begin a romance, which is tender despite Shaw's not having any idea what to do......
