Sir Thomas returns home exhausted after his early morning meetings. He asks Matthew if Lady Alice and Lady Margaret have gone to bed, and he is told Margaret is visiting with Mr. Will Roper. More tells Matthew it is too early for breakfast and wants to know where. Just then, Margaret and Will enter the room and Margaret tells her father that Will has proposed marriage. More refuses to give his consent. Will asks why and points out that he has passed the bar and comes from a good family.
Sir Thomas More replies that he will never give his consent as long as Roper is a heretic. Roper is repulsed by the word, and More points out that being a heretic is not a likeable thing. Will begins to talk about.....
