Act 1, Scene 3 Summary

The common man reappears on the stage and dons the coat and hat of a boatman. Sir Thomas More arrives and requests to be taken home. The boatman tells More he was on his way home, but will take More first. He indirectly asks for higher payment by saying that he knows More will make it worth his while. Thomas Cromwell steps out from behind an arch and reminds the boatman that fares are fixed. Cromwell is on his way to see Cardinal Wolsey and asks More if he left the cardinal in a good mood. More replies that he did not.

Sir Thomas More is going to the boat when Chapuys, the Spanish ambassador and his attendant arrive. Chapuys tells Thomas that the King of Spain will be insulted if Henry.....
