Part 3, Chapters 19-22 Summary

Chapter 19: Poe drinks and writes late into the night. He is interrupted by the arrival of Edmund and his mother. At first, Poe does not recognize Edmund because he is so absorbed in his story. For a moment, he believes that the characters he is writing about have come to life. Poe continues to write, but Edmund interrupts and asks him for money for food. Grudgingly, Poe gives Edmund money to buy food. Edmund is afraid to leave his mother with the drunken Poe, but because he must get food, he reluctantly leaves, locking the door behind him. Edmund sees Throck at the tavern where he goes to buy a meat pie. Edmund boldly asks Throck if Aunt Pru hired Throck to find his mother. Throck admits it is true......
