Chapter 13 Summary

Juliana is spending a great deal of money, buying herself skirts, blouses, shoes and a very expensive dress. To go with the dress, Juliana buys special bras and stockings. Joe goes to the barber and has his hair cut, coming back with it much shorter and blond. Juliana then buys him some clothes before they decide to find a hotel for the night. At the hotel, Joe sends his shirts off to be pressed before suggesting to Juliana that she have her hair done. Juliana asks how long they will be staying in Denver. When Joe tells her he intends to move on that night, Juliana finally begins to put together Joe's plan. Juliana realizes that Joe is not Italian, but German, and he intends to kill Abendsen, the writer of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy.
