Summary

Chapter 33. Lizet is awoken the following morning by an unfamiliar woman dressed in black, telling her that there is a raid taking place across the street. As she goes out onto the street, amidst screaming, sirens and the beginnings of a riot, she sees Ariel Hernandez being carried into the back of a van by a stranger. She runs after the van, but then turns back and goes into the Hernandez house in search of her mother. She finds her in a bedroom, comforting Caridaylis like she is her daughter. Although Lizet imagines the scene differently in the years that follow, in the moment she turns and leaves the house, then tells Leidy that Lourdes was involved in the riot, instead of with the girl who replaced them as her daughter.
