Summary

Chapter 1 is written from the third person perspectives of Julia, Girl (Alice), and Ellie.

In Los Angeles, Julia drives to the courthouse. She dodges the reporters waiting outside, but runs into them as she and her defense team go into the courthouse. For the last year, reporters have printed stories about areas of her life because she is a defendant in a lawsuit brought about because one of her patients killed four children. The victims’ parents have tried to sue others as well. Julia’s lawyer gets Julia released from being a defendant in the lawsuit. The parents of the children are angry and the parents of her former patient also blame her. Even though her lawyer wants Julia to make a statement, she runs away. She looks forward to getting back to the work she loves.
