Part 2: Chapter 18 Summary
The morning of Thursday, April 19, 1906, is dark and rainy. Pierre goes to a professional luncheon, where he enjoys some friendly shop talk before leaving for his publisher's, where he is scheduled to correct some proofs. Finding the publisher's office closed, he makes his way down the Rue Dauphine, where the narrow sidewalks are crowded with pedestrians and the street barely accommodates two lanes of traffic.
Pierre walks like an absent-minded man, alternating between the curb and the street itself. He follows behind a closed cab that obscures his vision. At the same time, a heavy wagon drawn by two horses turns onto the Rue Dauphine. Pierre, wanting to cross the street, steps out from behind the cab and runs into one of the horses pulling the wagon.
