Internet

The internet is a symbol of isolation in the modern world. While it works to bring people like Edie and Eric together, it also strips verisimilitude from their relationships and creates an artifice in every day that is destructive to genuine connection and empathy.

Disco

Disco music is a symbol of nostalgia. No one in the novel is presented as enjoying the music during its historical period. Edie's mother loved Disco music because she used to listen to it when she was a teenager. Eric like the music for the same reason. Edie likes the music because it reminds her of her mother.
