Alice is a college freshman when she is attacked and raped in a park near her dorm room on a May night as school is ending for the semester. The attack lasts for more than a hour and ends with her pleading for her life, begging her rapist not to kill her and promising that she won't tell. She reports the attack, vowing to follow through, though most rape victims don't. There is no action on the case throughout the summer months and it's actually Alice herself who encounters the man who raped her on a street near the college the following October. She and the rapist see each other and she says that he seems to believe himself powerful.
