Chapter 1 Summary

Jared Grace is reading a field guide that is lying on his bed while turning his clothes inside out. He is unable to turn his jeans inside out and put them back on but he does get his shirt on inside out. Jared is reading the section on protective devices as he is having pranks played on him by the house brownie and he hopes the suggested magic will help stop the harassment.

Thimbletack, the house brownie, is playing pranks on Jared by putting mud in his shoes, cutting his eyelashes and peeing on his pillow. Jared's sibling, Simon has a new kitten that is getting the blame for the last prank by their mother. Jared forces Thimbletack to give up a seeing stone to save Simon from a goblin camp and the nasty pranks start soon after this event. In an attempt...
