The Will to Live

The author notes that there are some who fear the comet will bring the end of the world and others who pray it will be so. There are those who are depressed and believe they have nothing for which to live. Maureen Jellison is one of those. She later says that it's one thing to stand on a mountain and consider falling to her death and quite another thing to actually take that step.

As Tim and Eileen are fighting their way out of town, Tim sees people in places bound to be covered in water in just a short period of time. Their own conscience says that they should stop and help, but they realize that they can't save all these people. Tim combines his desire to life with his desire to help others survive by yelling out the car window for people to run away.
