To celebrate the beginning of the new century, Dr. Urbino and Fermina set out in a hot air balloon headed for San Juan de la Ciénega with the country's first airmail delivery, a letter from the Governor. They look down and see a countryside dotted with corpses. Even from the balloon Dr. Urbino can diagnose their cause of death: not cholera, but a mortal wound through the back of each neck.
When Fermina disappears from the city, rumors abound that she has tuberculosis or some other horrible disease and has retreated to a hospital for the rich so that she can suffer away from prying eyes. Florentino is beside himself, of course, imagining her disfigured or dead. In truth, she has gone to the ranch to live with her cousin Hildebranda Sánchez, having discovered.....
