Spinning back some sixty years, we learn about the young Dr. Urbino, an eligible bachelor of twenty-eight, freshly returned from his studies and an extensive stay in Paris. That cosmopolitan city looms large in his memories and travels throughout his life. Through his eyes, we catch a glimpse of the nameless harbor town that is the setting for most of the book.
