Summary

The officers continue to lead Atticus and George into the woods at gunpoint. Letitia, hidden near the cars, causes a distraction by firing a gun. Two of the officers leave to investigate. The third officer is promptly killed by a huge, unseen beast. George and Atticus run back to their car and manage to escape with Letitia. They drive to Ardham and arrive at a large manor, the address of which was contained in Montrose’s letter. William—a butler who is apparently expecting them, greets them and welcomes them in. he says that the manor is owned by Samuel Braithwhite, son of Titus Braithwhite and current patriarch of the wealthy industrialist Braithwhite family.
