Summary

Part 3 is titled Halfway Home and takes place between May 1937 – February 1939. Chapter 22 opens with Martha thinking that she should have returned to St. Louis, but goes to New York instead. She is aware of how much Spain and Ernest “had gotten under my skin” (134). Martha helps Joris Ivens finish with the editing of his film The Spanish Earth. Martha arranges to show the film to the Roosevelts. Collier’s publishes Martha’s story about Madrid. Collier’s provides Martha with credentials and a correspondent’s badge to go back to Spain.

Chapter 23 opens with Martha meeting Ernest in Paris. Martha meets Robert Merriman, a history professor who is now in the Fifteenth Brigade. They realize they are both from St. Louis. When Ernest asks about it where she was, Martha says St. Louis and tells Ernest that “it’s nearer than you think...
