Summary

The novel begins with Louisiana declaring that she will write down the events that are to follow, so that if anyone were curious about her, they would have an answer. She begins by mentioning that her great-grandfather was a magician and had set into course a terrible curse that has now followed her. The story then pivots to Louisiana describing how she left Florida, with her Granny waking her at 3 a.m. Still groggy, she noticed the starry night and a constellation she thought looked like Pinocchio, not knowing she would never return.
