Summary

In “Lot,” the collection returns to Nicolás' point-of-view. He recalls his brother Javi becoming a heavy drug user after their father left, and then joining the army. His sister Jan met a white man and they got married and had a child together. Nicolás was left at home to look after their mother and help her with the family's restaurant. He recalls receiving a letter from Javi and writing back, but receiving no response. Jan warned Nicolás that the neighborhood was becoming increasingly white, and suggested they sell the restaurant. Nicolás' mother told him he should apply to college. A realtor visited the restaurant and told Nicolás and his mother they should sell. A few weeks later, Nicolás told his mother and Jan he thought they should hold onto the restaurant, and Jan told him...
