Chapter 12 Summary
Ralph lies in a culvert not far from castle rock. He considers his situation. Peeking out and up, he sees that the tribe has begun its feast. He cannot fool himself into believing they will not carry out their plans against him, but part of him tries valiantly to persuade himself to believe that what happened to Piggy was an accident. He eats greedily from the smashed fruit. He thinks the best thing to do is to ignore the leaden feeling in his heart and rely on the tribe's common sense, their daylight sanity. He does not want to sleep by himself in an empty shelter, so he limps back toward the castle rock.
He sees the pig's head, gleaming as white as the conch, atop its stick and it seems to jeer at him cynically. He hits out at it, breaking it into two pieces, and backs away, holding...
