Chapter 8 Summary

Back on the beach, the boys relate their findings to Piggy. Piggy is incredulous. Jack tells him to go up and see for himself. Ralph says the beast has teeth and big, black eyes. They talk about what to do. Ralph says if they cannot have a signal fire, they are beaten. Jack blows on the conch, and they go to the platform where the littluns are also gathering. Jack calls Ralph a coward, lies about Ralph's not going all the way to the mountain-top, and says he is not a hunter. He asks how many boys think Ralph should no longer be chief. No one raises his hand. Humiliated, Jack leaves, saying he will not be a part of Ralph's lot anymore and saying that anyone who wants to hunt with him.....
