Chapter 5 Summary

Ralph paces in the sand, thinking. He turns to the platform in a maze of thoughts and lacks the words to express them. He notices how unpleasant his clothes feel: stiff, frayed, and dirty. He realizes his dislike of flicking his tangled hair out of his eyes and rolling in the dry leaves at night.

Ralph begins the assembly, the purpose of which he says is to put things straight. He talks about the system of filling coconut shells with water that was begun and aborted; he mentions the shelters that too few of the boys helped to build; he reiterates the need for the boys to use a certain rocky area as a lavatory; and he brings up the fire. Ralph says they need to make smoke on the mountain-top or die and.....
