Summary

In Chapter 8, Near the River, Mark says he feels he owes Kieran, who must have killed Iarlath because of Mark. (Iarlath threatened to whip Mark and did whip both Julian and Emma.) Mark says he cannot leave Kieran to be tortured and killed. A phouka greets them and holds a quiet conversation with each, taking an item for each. Julian hands over his father's watch. Christina gives a hair clip. The phouka wants Emma's stele and Emma refuses until the phouka says Emma will “see the face of someone you loved, who is dead” if she pays the price to enter the land of faeries (Location 2105). Emma hands over the stele, which is what Shadowhunters use to draw runes. Emma does not see what Mark pays.
