Summary

Chapter 2 is titled “The Low Cuts Strike Again” and this one ends up on Placer Street. The four characters of this chapter are John John Watson, Francy Baskin, Trista Smith, and Britton Burns, known as Bit. The four are known as the Low Cuts. Their parents have no extra money. The four met in a school supervised support group because each had a parent who was a cancer survivor. Each family is struggling to make ends meet, and Bit is the one who discovered that the cancer has caused the financial hardships. Bit told his friends, who then asked their parents about it. John John's mother has breast cancer. Francy's father has prostate cancer. Trista's father has stomach cancer. The four friends cut their hair so that it is “almost bald” as a “sign of solidarity” (22). They steal change from almost any opportunity, but...
