Chapters 1-2 Summary

Sookie is a cocktail waitress who can read human minds, and her boyfriend, Bill, is a vampire. Vampires have recently come out of hiding and are in the process of making their existence acceptable to humans through government legislation.

In chapter 1, Sookie is working at Merlotte's Bar when Andy Bellefleur, a lifelong acquaintance, comes in and gets very drunk. Sookie calls Andy's sister, Portia, and has her take Andy home. Sookie returns to work early the following day and finds Lafayette, the short order cook at Merlotte's and a friend of Sookie's, dead in the back seat of Andy's car.
