Chapter 23, Amelia Makes Good Summary
Jack once again encounters his brother, Bill, this time while he is on the buffalo hunt. Bill still peddles whiskey and has degenerated over the years to where he has no teeth and seems to never bathe, although to Jack the difference in Bill is not an extreme transformation from when Jack had met him before. Jack decides not to drink Bill's watered down whiskey, but the buffalo skinner, with whom Jack hunts, does. When Bill tips the whiskey barrel to fill the skinner's cup, light from the campfire reveals several lumps at the bottom, which turn out to be six rattlesnake heads. The group of hunters and skinners nearly lynch Bill, but Wyatt Earp intervenes. Jack makes an offhand remark about Earp's last name, and Earp pushes Jack to the ground. Jack challenges Earp to draw his weapon, but Earp instead directly walks up to Jack and hits him...
