Joe Leaphorn
The Navaho police officer who takes over the case of the murder of Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso, Leaphorn is a conscientious person who wants order above all else. Whenever he has a nagging problem, it's typically because he can't find the order in the situation and feels that once he finds that natural order, the problem will be solved. Leaphorn knows the Navajo ways and is the first to realize that the healing being sought by the Listening Woman could play a part in solving the murders of Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso.
Leaphorn is something of a superhero, who goes for three days with very little food or sleep in order to save a group being held hostage. He is able to kill a dog with his bare hands and fights off a group of renegades, sometimes with no weapon other than his wits. An interesting quirk...
