Chapter 3 Summary

Stella describes the first time that she met the Roths, which is when Social Services drops her off at their home. They have expressions on their faces as if they are surprised to see her. Simon Roth keeps cracking jokes but with a straight face so that Stella can't tell he's joking at first. Shana Roth doesn't even seem to acknowledge that Stella is there until after the Social Services' woman has already left.

Stella admits that over the years nothing has changed. The relationship between her and the Roths is exactly the same and so is the décor in the house. every time Shana sees Stella, it's as if she forgot Stella was living in the house, even though it is six years later. Stella also finds out shortly after moving in that the Roths are Jewish, which her family was...
