A great storm kicked up one afternoon and the sea began to rage with enormous swells. Pi's little lifeboat rode the swells up and then sped down the opposite side. Pi was able to cover the entire boat with the tarpaulin and crawl underneath to relative safety. Richard Parker's territory was under the tarp and in the blackness underneath, Pi does not know the whereabouts of the tiger except for his growling.
