Chapters 5-6 Summary

Food at school is beginning to run out, and the children are given stale peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. School will close early because of the food situation, and there will be no tests to determine grades. Megan has begun giving other children her own sandwiches at lunch, and Miranda finds this selfless behavior disturbing because Megan claims she only needs God's love for nourishment.

Miranda is concerned that her mom doesn't care about her grades anymore, but her mom is more worried about surviving. Miranda wants to give blankets as aid to people in New York and New Jersey but her mom won't let her. She says they have to look after themselves now. Miranda finds out that they cannot get more heating oil, so will have to rely on the wood stove if things are not back...
