Summary

In chapter one of part three, Krymov replies to a summons, but the person who called him refuses to see him, despite arranging the meeting himself. Later Krymov is accosted by a captain, ushered into a room, and ordered to hand over his weapon and personal documents. Krymov responds in disbelief. In chapter two, Krymov is interrogated and beaten. Krymov feels an intense hatred towards his interrogators. In chapter three, Krymov is taken to a prison. Krymov is shocked by the poor conditions there, and his experience of captivity. In the morning, he is brought his suitcase and taken to the airfield. In chapter four Krymov is brought to the Lubyanka prison. He is inspected by a doctor and then brought to his cell, which he shares with three others: Dreling, Bogoleev, and Katsenelenbogen.
