Chapter 21 Summary

Rayford, Chloe, Hattie, and Buck meet up for dinner at the Carlisle Hotel as they planned. Rayford prays that he has the same strength in telling Buck the story as he did for Hattie. After a three-hour meal, Rayford breaks into the whole story. Buck is riveted by Rayford's story, though because of his journalistic nature, he does not let on. Rayford, therefore, feels as though he has completely lost Buck. He does not realize how much of an impact his speech has had on Buck. When Rayford finishes, Buck politely thanks him for dinner and excuses himself......
