Summary

Alex organizes Erich’s RIAS interview, planning several safety precautions to ensure he is able to exit Berlin safely.

Alex meets Dieter at the park, pleasantly surprised when Dieter relays the rumor that Markovsky deserted.

When Alex returns, he finds Roberta Kleinbard waiting for him, nervously wringing her hands. She tells him that her husband, Herb, has been taken away and she has no idea what to do. Alex invites her up to his apartment, calling the police. They tell him that Herb has been taken to Oranienburg, a camp for political prisoners in Sachsenhausen. She begs Alex to “Come with me. Please I have to see him. I’ll never ask another thing as long as I live...How could he be a political prisoner...he came to be with them, the Party...I have to know if he’s alright. Please...
