Summary

In "Indian Summer," Frank is in his hospital bed “gasping like a hooked fish” due to an issue with his oxygen tank (336). Tenn comes in and “the sight of Frank flailing and wheezing stopped him dead” (336). Having been “doped-up on morphine,” Frank remembers nothing (336). He wakes up to Tenn recounting the incident: “‘He’s in there gasping like a hooked fish!’ … That’s what got them moving, baby. My tears and carrying-on. If you want a hospital to pay you any attention, you’ve got to play the hysteric” (337). Frank is given an injection by the nurse and wakes up to find the room filled with his friends. “He’d been swimming. He heard their voices from the bottom of the ocean” (337).
