Chapter Thirty One

Natalya and her father are planning to go ahead toward the Chinese border. They do not think they can wait for Bocharev to help them and they are not sure they can really trust that he will be able to help them get out of the country.

Natalya tells her father she is scared that the Soviets will use her to capture Mack if they find her. This is one reason they do not feel they can wait for Bocharev's help. They are discussing asking Zhikarev for help, they are sure he has connection at the border. Baronas tells his daughter he thinks there must be some problem at the border and that Zhikarev will have enough trouble just getting himself out of the country.
