Point of View

The novel is written in first person from the limited perspective of Adam Costello. Adam is a teenage boy living in America after the arrival of an alien species called the vuvv. The perspective is completely limited to only what Adam knows, though he does present historical information that he did not personally witness. For example, the novel opens with a scene from the mid-1900s, before Adam was born. In this scene, there are teenagers watching a movie about an alien invasion. The chapter ends with the notation that the actual invasion was nothing like that scene. Adam also relates information about the vuvv's arrival and the negotiations that took place, though he did not personally witness those events. With those exceptions, the remainder of the novel relates what Adam sees and experiences.
