life and importance. Amis, who could be one of the
funniest novelists of the twentieth century, seems an
unlikely choice for introducing Tennyson's poetry,
but his essay is reverent and warm.

Part biography and part criticism, this book gives
some insight into Tennyson's psychological state as
he wrote this poem.
