Maddie's Apartment

Though Maddie does not stay long at her first apartment, her second apartment is the backdrop for all her interactions with her new romantic partner Ferdie Pratt. Ferdie, in fact, secures this second safer flat after the alleged break-in at her first place. Because the couple's interracial affair is illegal, the two spend all of their time together at Maddie's. Ferdie sneaks up her fire escape and spends almost every night with Maddie.

Though the two are unable to go out in public together, their time at the apartment allows them to cultivate a different sort of intimacy. After making love, they lie in bed for hours talking. Constantly worried about Maddie's safety, Ferdie often warns Maddie about her tendency to leave her windows open. Maddie, however, never seems afraid at this new home, and finds comfort in Ferdie's frequent visits.
