Chapter 3 Summary

Molina begins the chapter by telling Valentin about yet another movie. In this movie, the Germans occupy France during WWII. A butcher who has been trading in the black market for surplus food is arrested by German soldiers. And there are two other guys trading in the black market, one with a club foot and the other with a cross-eyed, murderer's face.

Then the movie turns to a theatre with dance hall girls. One of them is Leni, sort of the star of the show. She eyes a German officer in the audience. Later in her dressing room she gets flowers.

One of the chorus girls tells Leni she's pregnant and in love with a German officer who is going to marry her. When the chorus girl goes to visit her boyfriend, she is run over in the street by the club foot man and the cross-eyed...
