Chapter 3 Summary

Molina begins the chapter by telling Valentin about yet another movie. In this movie, the Germans occupy France during WWII. A butcher who has been trading in the black market for surplus food is arrested by German soldiers. And there are two other guys trading in the black market, one with a club foot and the other with a cross-eyed, murderer's face.

Then the movie turns to a theatre with dance hall girls. One of them is Leni, sort of the star of the show. She eyes a German officer in the audience. Later in her dressing room she gets flowers.

One of the chorus girls tells Leni she's pregnant and in love with a German officer who is going to marry her. When the chorus girl goes to visit her boyfriend, she is run.....
