Mare Barrow

Mare is one of three narrators of the novel and the primary protagonist. She is a newblood with the ability to control electricity. She has long, dark hair and a small frame. She was raised in a poor Red town called the Stilts with her family, and provided for them by stealing food and supplies. In an attempt to save her brother from conscription, she worked as a maid for Silver royalty, where her ability was discovered during the Queenstrial. After her newblood status surfaced, she was forced to act as “Mareena”, a long-lost Silver until the death of Cal’s father. She escaped execution and joined the Scarlet Guard before being taken prisoner by Maven. She spends most of the novel as Maven’s prisoner, wearing Silent Stone shackles that prevent her from using her ability.
