Summary

Chapter 25 is narrated by Mare as she reflects on her time at the Notch – the safehouse she used for rescuing newbloods before her imprisonment – and compares it to the Piedmont base. In the present, Kilorn takes her to a gymnasium to train. Cal walks out as they approach and she tells him about an argument she had with her family that morning about whether to resettle or continue to fight. He tells her that she should talk more, and then follows her to training. They practice “target and theory”, in which Mare tries to use her power against several hypothetical types of Silvers. Julian approaches and points out that Mare has an audience, then encourages her to introduce herself to the watching newbloods. She meets a newblood named Rafe who can control lightning as well, and he tells her that there are more...
