Summary

Chapter 22 is narrated from Mare’s point of view as she adjusts to life on the Piedmont base. She wakes up early and goes for a run with Cal. Clouds move in overhead and it starts raining, taking them by surprise. They move to a patch of trees and undress each other. The narrative skips forward to Mare and Cal walking towards the base hospital to wash the mud of their bodies. They walk in and a nurse tells them to follow her. She brings them to Sara, who has had her tongue restored and speaks for the first time in years. Cal goes to a bathroom to clean up and Mare enters a room where Farley is in laying in a bed in labor.
