Summary

Chapter 19 is narrated by Evangeline as she waits for her brother in the palace during the battle. Ptolemus comes around the corner bleeding, and Wren works to seal his primary wound – a severed hand. Evangeline forms a stretcher with his discarded armor and they hurry to the river where Volo is supposed to be waiting with a boat. As they walk, she reflects on Maven, Mare, and her attraction to Elane. She, Ptolemus, and Wren reach the final stretch of the palace yard and several Guardsmen start shooting at her. She turns their bullets into a web and traps them, then jumps the cliff to the river. The narrative skips forward to Evangeline, her family, and Wren riding the boat down the river. They discuss their treason and Evangeline reflects further on Mare and Maven. She asks her mother about House Haven, Iral...
