Summary

Chapter 13 is narrated from Mare’s point of view as she spends the next week reading Julian’s books. She learns about a period called the Reformation, over a thousand years prior, which took place after the near-extinction of humanity. During this time, people with Silver blood and abilities began to appear and were persecuted by the then-dominant Reds. One day, Kitten brings her plain clothes and gloves. She and the other three guards walk through the palace and Mare sees servants covering up furniture with sheets, indicating that the palace is being abandoned. The guards lead Mare outside and to the treasury building, then to an unmarked stone door. Thinking the door leads to a cell, Mare fights against her captors.
