Summary

Chapter 10 is narrated from Mare’s point of view as she destroys the books in her chamber. She thinks that Nanny’s rescue attempt must have been Cal’s idea and hopes that he does not try again. The narrative jumps forward to the next morning. Mare wakes up and finds that the destroyed books are gone, replaced by new ones. She grabs one to rip apart and sees “Property of Julian Jacos” written on the inside cover, then discovers that all the new books belonged to him. Comforted by the books, she rips up her dress instead. A healer comes to heal Mare’s wounds and she taunts her and Clover about Corros Prison.
